FMQ Week #4 Straight Lines

Straight lines using Cheater Quilt Fabric. First sample is a dragon I downloaded from "Quilting Designs from Nature" AQS, 2011. All but the wings are Free-Motion.

I free-motioned the following Cheater Quilt block to attach to a cloth bag that the local Quilt Show requires for the "Wall Hanging" I entered in the show.

Wonky, but getting better.

Now that my hubby finished making my extension table, and I purchased two more darning/free motion quilting feet (open metal foot is my favorite), and I bought a teflon mat...FMQ is getting better. Working out all the sewing issues was the hardest part of this project. Now I'm ready to tackle the next lesson. Bring it on Leah!!!

FMQ Week #3 Scale

Finally. Photos of Week #3's sample.

Started on upper left....small, then larger, and then medium and then ended lower right side.

Not my best stippling/meandering.....but while stippling I got asked 3 questions by my sis's provider and then 2 questions by my hubby. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Come on, I'm working. I should have worked in my quilt room instead of on my favorite machine on my craft table/kitchen area. grrrrrrr.

Okay. Bought a new FMQ foot, metal open-foot. It works great. But instead of putting a rubber band, I lifted the spring part with a strategically placed tie wrap.

This works great!! Finally. Now if only my hubby would hurry with my extension table.

FMQ Project Week #3

Well, after adjusting and readjusting my sewing machine, I think I finally figured out all my problems.
According to Leah:
1. Reconfigure the darning/free motion quilting foot.
Sounds easy, she demos it easy, I broke the first one.
My DH (dear hubby) sanded the rough spots so I could use what was left of it until my new one arrived in the mail. I ordered it from AMAZON from a place in MO called Sew Affordable.
2. Don't drop the feed dogs.
Well, after 3 weeks of struggles, I realized I HAVE TO drop the feed dogs. I could feel them tugging the fabric so they had to be dropped. Maybe not dropping would work on my other sewing machines, but not this one.
3. Isacord Polyester Thread
Well, this will have to be ordered online. None available around these parts.
4. Schmetz Universal 80/12 needle.
No problem. Got lots of those.
5. Thread Length ZERO.....my button resets when I make any changes on my machine, so I gotta keep watch over that little booger.

Note to self:
If you fix the foot too high (with rubber band) so it lets your fabric sandwich slide around easily (reconfigured darning foot "the new one" rubber banded) when I raise the foot it will hit the top of the machine and make the foot loose causing it to get in the way of the needle when you let it back down and YES, your needle will hit it.
YIKES!!

I ordered another darning foot.

The folks at Sew Affordable must love me......

Quadrant stippling with Leah Day. Lesson #2

Perhaps I should have started with a larger fabric block. This is an 8 X 9 block.

The lower right side was the beginning, then the lower left, upper left, and then right top. (for those of you not following the project)

I don't know why I kept wanting to go in circles. I need more practice on stippling on a larger scale, and then get back to quadrant stippling.

My hubby is building me an extension table for this machine and perhaps I'll do better. (sure)

FMQ Project Lesson #1

First I had to get my machine set up correctly, as per Leah's instructions. Then I did a practice session of circles, swirls, whatever came out as I tried to control my fabric.

So I did circles in gray, then in green, then in navy, over and over.

Next, wiggle around in rows and then I got creative as I was still trying to control machine,
my gloves, and the fabric.

More rows of stippling, meandering, swirling, all still trying to get my machine, hands, eyes, and brains all on the same page.

Now for something fun.

This was the worse fabric ever (brown) to use. As you can see it was running. I also used white fabric that I basted and now have some ready for today's lesson.

I had so much fun swirling and stippling. I just used the same swatch over and over in different colors.

Piece makers receive donation of fabric

So our quilting group gladly accepted her donation.

I was watching "Bramwell" mini-series on Netflix and didn't want to get masa all over my remote and xbox controller. SO, I put them into a ziploc bag. Also put my cell phone into a plastic sandwich bag. Worked great!!! Sometimes I come up with amazing ideas. lol

I told her I would never sell my quilt. It's for a baby in the hospital.

If I were to sell another, it would be too expensive for anyone to buy.

Too much work went into this quilt.

I put my controller and remote control in plastic, in case I needed to make changes to the Netflix BBC series I am watching. Don't want all the masa clogging up the buttons. LOL

Chopped veggies and mushrooms.

The first time I made tamales, with help, I used 2 borrowed tamaleras. (steamers)

Then I read online about a girl using an upside down metal colander.

Great idea. Worked just fine.

My veggie filling is three of these boxes of veggies, cooked as per box, and slightly chopped. I added a small can of sliced mushrooms and chopped those too. That's it!! Nothing else but what is in the box and the drained chopped can of mushrooms.

Fruit Fly Trap

Got fruit flies? Here is a trap, but you have to be patient. Put the coffee filter on jar with a rubberband and watch the fruit flies enter, and get trapped. If you get impatient and try to swat the fruit flies that land on top of the filter, they will just fly away.

Homemade Lotion Recipe

So, I got this recipe off the internet because there were so many great reviews.

The recipe called for:

2-9oz bottles of baby lotion of choice

2-8oz jars of Vitamin E Skin Care Cream

1-4oz Jar of Vaseline

I used:

One 16.5oz bottle of Baby Magic Lavender & Chamomile lotion

Two jars of Vitamin E Skin Care Cream 4oz each

One jar 3.75oz Petroleum Jelly

I whipped it up with my kitchen hand-held mixer.

Then put into a couple of jars, the petroleum jelly jar, and the vitamin E containers.

This stuff is awesome!!

I already gave away the two vitamin E containers of lotion.

I'm going to buy some small purse-size plastic container for this lotion as it is great for dry skin.

Baby lotion $2.23

Vitamin E Cream $3.67 for both jars

Petroleum Jelly $1.32

Total cost $7.81 plus for 28.25 oz

Less than 28cents an oz.

Dau Karen's First Place Cake

My daughter always participates in her Annual Office Christmas Dessert Contest. Twelve years ago she won 3rd place (Cherry Bars) and a couple of years ago she won 2nd place ( Pumpkin Pie Cake), but this year she make our family favorite and won!!

We have been making/eating this cake for years. It's our favorite and I never thought it was anything special. But I never thought to decorate it like a Christmas Wreath, I always just add a lemon glaze. This looks awesome!!

Recipe? Are you joking?

I just add a box of pistachio pudding to a yellow cake mix and make per box instructions. The original recipe called for an extra egg, some almond extract, and some green food coloring. Sometimes I did this, other times not. My daughter makes it with a white cake mix. Google or make to your liking. I once made it with a tunnel of chocolate going through the middle, but got complaints about messing with perfection.

My Tuesday group "Piecemakers" from our Savior Lutheran Church in McAllen is very supportive of my local group "St. John Quilters".....I have taken all that I've learned and helped set up the same operation in San Juan. One of the quilters from Piecemakers was a guest speaker at our local group. Elaine, of "The Quilted Cat" gave a show-and-tell that inspired us to further our skills. We all had an awesome time sharing.

Our stack is growing.

Our baby quilts will be donated to Driscoll's Children's Hospital in McAllen.

Houston International Quilt Show

We planned this trip for a year. I traveled 8 hours (with a smoker) and was thrilled to be in my Hometown of Houston, just a couple of blocks away from where I attended high school. "Incarnate Word Academy" an all-girls Catholic School. I attended under protest.

So we are watching a demo when I hear someone calling my name. I looked up and resting on a nearby chair was our quilting instructor!! We jumped up and ran to greet her. What a surprise! Of course we should have know she would be there, but to actually meet up with her...Wow! So I styled my jacket for her. My Dia de los Muertos Jacket (from a sweatshirt) that I made in her class. Numerous fellow quilters stopped me to take a photo of my jacket and ask how I made it.

Over 400 quilts are blessed and then distributed to children at local schools.

I made this flag quilt for 9-11. It went to an exchange student who will take it home to Spain when she leaves the U.S. I am honored that she specifically chose my quilt. The Piecemakers give a quilt to all graduating seniors. She leaves in Jan, so she was present to get her quilt. She was given one of my other patriotic quilts but then chose my flag, when she was told that it was an option.

Make your own BEAN SPROUTS

I have always wanted to make my own bean sprouts. I love eating them, but the ones you get at the market are always old looking. I met a lady at the Organic Veggie Farmer's Market who said she bought a $100 machine to make them. I bought some of her sprouts and they were fresh and delicious. Yum!! So I came home and Googled sprout-making and Voila'......Make your own in a jar. I got out some canning jars (Wide mouth jars would be better, but I was too lazy to go out to the Bungalow/storage to get them. Once grown, they are hard to remove from small mouth jars. Learn from my mistake.)

I got a sheet of plastic canvas and cut out a circle using the innner seal as a template.That way you can pour water into the jar as you must rinse the bean a couple times a day and then turn them over onto

the dishdrainer.

Step number 1: Buy some Mung Beans and some Lentils.

Step number 2: These beans are dried, so soak a half of cup of each in a jar over night.

Step number 3: Pour out water and pour in more water to rinse beans, pour out and place upside down jar onto the dishdrainer. Rinse beans 2-3 times a day, and drain.

DO NOT KEEP BEANS/SPROUTS IN THE WINDOW. I JUST PLACED THEM THERE FOR PHOTOS. I PLACE THE JARS UPSIDE DOWN IN THE DISHDRAINER NEAR THE WINDOW.

Bean sprouts from Mung Beans are done sooner than the Lentils.

Harvest Time after 4 days!!! Ate some on a cheese sandwich. Ate them like as a snack. Shared my harvest with my granddaughter. Packed her some in a ziplock bag.

Lentils are still growing. Day 6. They are ready to eat, I just want to see how long they will get.

First, I designed the quilt.

Had a hard time with the isosceles triangle. Drawing one is easy. Making a paper pattern is easy. Sewing them up together with the correct 1/4" seams.....grrrr!

Ta dah!! Just needs some batting and a backing.

I love it.

Day of the Dead Altar in a Cigar Box

I helped my favorite almost-daughter to make an altar out of a cigar box. We had so much fun dragging out all the shoe boxed full of feathers, sequins, miniature fruit and vegetables, ribbons, glue, and Day of the Dead related paper photos. What Fun!! In fact, my little friend said that coming to my house was like going into a Craft Store. I have everything in stock!!!

Quilt Across Texas

Well, this Region 8 (Gulf Coast/South Texas) has 15 quilt shops participating, and none are in Deep South Texas. Boo Hoo!!!
You purchase a passport, visit all the shops and get your passport stamped, get a free quilt block pattern from each shop, and then you can enter their drawing for prizes. In order to enter into the Texas-wide drawing (for the big grand prizes) you must also visit quilt shops in other regions. Well, that just about leaves us out.
We should start one down here and everyone must visit quilt shops (3?) and quilt shows at the various RV Parks!!! ( this is my idea and it is great! ! !)

Our quilts are made up of 8"X9" blocks, 7 across and 11 down and they are tied. Our group makes about 500 a year. They are blessed and given to needy children.

I made this quilt for the "Piecemakers" quilting for charity. Here it is on my loveseat.

The other members ironed it and added batting and a back and tied the quilt.

All the members quickly finished the quilt and show it to the Pastor. (Our Saviour Lutheran Church)

It is now proudly hanging in the church, ready for Labor Day and 9-11.

I am a slow knitter, and I had to teach myself to knit cables in order to make this scarf. Very easy, just slow.......and I like to speed crochet. Been busy making Quilts for Charity. Made 4 quilt tops. One last week and three this week. Saw my quilt being finished when I drop off the three on Tuesday. Took all my granddaughters with me so they can see where I spend my Tuesdays.

As per Needlework book...DOUBLE SHELL EDGING: Ch 19. Row 1: sk 9 ch, 1 shell (4dc, ch3, 4dc) in next ch, sk 5ch, 1 shell in next ch, sk 2ch, 1dtr in last ch, ch5, turn. Row2: 1 shell in each 3-ch sp of shell below, 1 dtr in last dc ...of 2nd shell, ch 5, turn. Repeat Row 2 for pattern, ending last row with ch1, 1 dc in last dc; do not turn.

Then I did 3 sc in each opening on each side and whatever fit on the bottoms.

Then followed with dc all around. Ta Dah! A little free form.

This is how I started. Then I put asided until encouraged by Lita, a fellow needlework artist like myself, who nudged me to continue and then gave me the idea to add tassles. This stitch was taught on youtube by the Crochet Geek, Teresa Richardson.

Used the same stitch as a tunisian stitch. Came out thick and heavy. But I love the design.

This scarf starts off with the straight stitch of the crohook (Tunisian stitch) and then I started the shell stitch. My dau-in-law is modeling the scarf for me. Love how she chose to loop the scarf. Excellent.

Shell stitch crochet scarf on a crohook for Winter Special Olympic Scarf Project 2012

For this scarf I chained 19 to make 6 shells and they measured 6" across.

Instructions: When creating a pattern, chain 3 stitches for each shell desired, plus one more stitch for the turning stitch. (180 stitches, plus 2 for 60 shells=181 chain stitches) will make approximately 48 X 60 or as long as you desire. For a baby afghan or lap robe, try about 40 shells (120 stitches plus 1)…

Practice Sample: Chain 22 stitches loosely, work loosely until you feel comfortable. Pick up a loop through every chain stitch across row (slip stitch) you now have all stitches on needle.

On larger Afghan, put stopper on end of hook after each color change to prevent dropping stitches.

Change to opposite end and tie second color through last stitch.

Chain 4, pull 4th chain through 3 loops. Chain 3, pull third chain through 3 loops...repeat…to the end of the row, ending with pull chain through 3 loops. You will only have on stitch left on hook…(do not pull tight as you have to pick up these stitches..)

With the same end of hook and same color yarn…pull one loop through each chain *slip stitch) between shells only…(if for some reason you have 3 or 4 chains, correct to have 3 loops or you will not have even rows of shells. Now all stitches are on needle.

Change to opposite end and use other color. *you should have different colored yarns hanging from each side.)

Chain 4 (as above) and pull 4th chain through 3 loops…continue as before….return, picking up loops with the same color.

Continue changing colors at ends, each two rows…repeat these two rows until you have your desired length. Finish with a row of only one stitch left on needle…now pull each slip stitch through both stitches each time to bind off project. Cut both yarns about 3 inches, know and weave in tails at corners. ENJOY!

I take 16oz of any kind of pasta (conchitas would work) usually Penne. Make according to package. Drain and put into a casserole dish. Heat up a 24oz jar of spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce. Pour over pasta. Make a package of Green Giant "Antioxidant blend" veggies. (Broccoli, carrots, red and yellow sweet peppers.) Stir into the pasta/sauce. Sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese over the top and heat in microwave until cheese is melted. Enjoy with some garlic bread. YUM!!

I had a bad attack of VERTIGO yesterday. I was at Goodwill searching the books shelves. I had my head tilted to the right and after the sixth case (with 4 shelves) I raised my head up and the room tilted. And of course nausea and vomiting followed. But I did get 11 books at 49cents each.

I am making this cake in my new convection oven that I got for my patio. My stove oven heats up the house and I need to bake outdoors, especially when my granddaughters come for their annual summer month.

Carrots

This is one of the smaller carrots that Barbara's provider gave us. We have carrots coming out of our ears. Carrots sticks dipped Ranch Dressing, Steamed Carrots in butter, carrot cake, carrot/apple/walmut muffins, carrot salad, carrots in soup, carrots in rice...you get the picture.

Oh yeah, my hubby is holding the carrot. Our sis-in-law asked if he grew that in his garden...haha...we wish. Those carrots are still growing.

10 minute quilt block

Each colored square is 10" by 10".....seams are 1/4". Do the math.

Look it up on You tube if you want a tutorial. Super easy to make. Took me longer to wash/dry, iron, cut all the fabric. Putting together was fast. Three seams, some ironing and then I sewed down the yellow diamond shape like a Cathedral Window quilt block. Eleven more to go to make a quilt.

I got a recipe (from a quilting newsletter) for the following dessert.

Jell-ogurt

Jello/Yogurt

1 small package Sugar-Free Jello

1 cup boiling water

1 6oz container of yogurt

That's it. Just dissolve the jello with 1 cup boiling water. Then I add an ice cube to speed the cooling process. It doesn't need to be cool, it's just my own way of thinking.

Anyhow, then add the container of yogurt. Stir well. Put in cups/containers and chill until set, just like jello.

I like to use Raspberry jello and Raspberry yogurt.

I usually make 2-4 boxes at a time. 2 of each flavor. Thewhen snack time I am set.

Now for the pie. Make 2 boxes of Sugar Free Jello with your 2 containers of yogurt.

Then pour into a ready made graham cracker crust. Voila'

Let chill to set. Add lots of Sugar Free Cool Whip on top.

The above pie is Peach Jello and Peach Yogurt!!

Since I can't eat ice cream and I can't eat pudding......ta dah!!!!

Barbara's favorite is Lime Jello and Lime Yogurt.

My mom just bought us a container of Orange Cream Yogurt to add to our Orange Jello. Another one of Barbara's favorites.

Dresden Basket

I saw this pattern in a magazine, and then lost it among my many other magazines and patterns. I googled it and someone had a copy of the pattern for sale. I zoomed in on the copy and saw the name of the magazine, and month/year. I then tracked down my copy and proceeded to make the basket.

Dresden Plate Basket

My DH (dear husband) made me a plexi-glass template for this basket.

I sewed the basket onto a used dryer sheet, trimmed, and turned inside out. Ironed and then hand sewed it all down. Hence the name applique...lol

A quick layout. I did the flowers and basket handle the same.

Amost all done. More sewing and then some embroidery embelishments.

Dresden Plate Quilt Block

Got the template from this quilting magazine.

Chose a flower on the fabric to be the top center of petal. Outlined it on the plastic template and lined it up to other flowers on the fabric.

Didn't have enough fabric so I chose this green fabric to alternate petals.

Sewed the top of fabric and made points using the white plastic tool shown on the right of photo.

Sewed the petals, that I ironed, together.

I double checked that the petals were alternating. My plastic template, with flowers drawn, is peeking out from under the fabric to the left.

Ironing it flat helps as I sew them all together.

Once I cut out all my petals my fabric looked like swiss cheese. I made a smaller template and started cutting out petals for a smaller version of the Dresden Plate.

It is finished, except for the center. Still deciding on what fabric to use, and a design as well.

Classic Square Log Cabin Quilt Block

This is made From a Folding Oldies Book. There is hardly any sewing, mostly folding and ironing.

Cut out four sides and center from template in the book.

Sew sides to center square. I chose a butterfly fabric for center.

Once the sides are sewn, iron seams.

Flip over and get ready to fold and iron.

I'm folding and pining the pleats.

This is the second block I made and I came up with the idea to use my bread knife to get some knife pleats. (heehee) It really worked. Watch out, as knife get hot. And don't pull out fast if the blade side is in the fold.

Pinned and ready to sew. I had to weave in the edges into the edges of the next side piece
